At Green Ridge, we are proud to be a Gold Rights Respecting School. We were accredited with the award in June 2023.
The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of school life in the UK.
As a school, we are committed to creating safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. Our Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
Working alongside The UK Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF UK) and using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as our guide, we strive to ensure that children are able to articulate their rights across the curriculum and explain how duty-bearers support them to enjoy them.
We teach the children about their rights explicitly through weekly RRSA assemblies, where we discuss a different article every week linked to the UNCRC. Global news stories are shared with the children and conversations are had around how they can make a difference in their community, at a local level, as well as which rights these stories link to. The Academy Parliament also play a role in discussing and evaluating how rights can be further embedded across the school. The rights are a vital part of the creation of class charters at the start of the academic year, where children reflect on what rights each of their expectations links to.
